The Agentic Enterprise. AK · Morning Edition · 8 min read | Thursday, October 29, 2026 Google's best model ships to defenders first.Google released Gemini 4 Carbon to a small group of cyber defenders on the same day its cloud revenue doubled and Alphabet's stock fell about 10% after hours. Carbon now tops the Artificial Analysis index by one point, and for now only vetted security teams can use it. It is Google's second gated, cyber-first frontier release in a row, with attack-and-patch benchmarks leading the pitch. It lands beside a cloud business that carries a $561 billion backlog and has started renting outside compute to keep up. For buyers, both the top model and the compute to run it are now allocated. | The Big Story Models Google gates its frontier, and its cloud is full| G | oogle DeepMind released Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday, two weeks after Gemini 4 Argon, and led with cybersecurity. Google reports 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro for finding vulnerabilities, 54.8% on ExploitGym for exploiting them and 71.0% on CWE-bench for patching them, all measured with guardrails off. Access starts with a subset of cyber defenders and widens through Google's Fairwind program; everyone else gets it "as soon as possible." Introductory pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output, rising later to $4 and $20. Google · Engadget |

The lead is narrow: 59 against 58 for Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 and 57 for OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, and Google supplied its own cyber numbers. Google has now sent two frontier models in a row to defenders first. It hasn't said why, but a model this strong at exploitation is useful to attackers too. The same evening, Alphabet showed what the buildout costs. Google Cloud revenue rose 103% to $30.7 billion and its backlog reached $561 billion, but $51.4 billion of capex pushed free cash flow to negative $9.1 billion. Earnings missed, mostly on an $8.7 billion loss on equity stakes, and revenue of $127.6 billion fell just short of forecasts. CFO Anat Ashkenazi said Google began renting third-party compute late in the quarter, which will weigh on cloud margins near term. Alphabet expects just over half the backlog to turn into revenue within two years. AP via NY1 · 24/7 Wall St. The best model is rationed by policy. The capacity to run it is rationed by supply. The Spearhead Take If your security team could qualify as a Fairwind partner, ask Google about access now. Don't re-platform for a one-point lead. Ask Google where your 2027 capacity comes from, including any third-party compute, and keep a second path for every critical workload. |

| Moving PiecesFive developments with practical consequences. Cloud Azure grows 48% as Microsoft's capex comes in lightMicrosoft disclosed Azure revenue in dollars for the first time: $33.17 billion, up about 48%. Capex of $45.2 billion landed below forecasts, and free cash flow stayed positive at $18.6 billion, though down 27%. Guidance calls for 49% to 50% Azure growth next quarter, and shares rose about 4% after hours. "We still have demand that exceeds supply," CFO Amy Hood said, adding that Microsoft has debt-market access it hasn't tapped. Both Microsoft and Google now say AI demand exceeds supply. If Azure is your primary cloud, get capacity dates in writing. SiliconANGLE | Infrastructure SK hynix says the memory squeeze lasts until 2030SK hynix reported third-quarter revenue up 328% from a year ago at an 80% operating margin, and said long-term agreements with 14 customers already cover more than half of its 2027-2028 capacity. Its CFO expects PC and phone shipments to fall as memory prices rise, per The Register. Samsung's chip division produced about 99% of its record operating profit, and Samsung raised capex sharply. Third-quarter revenue rose 20.5% to $4.11 billion, and agent consumption in production is up more than 13 times year over year. Some of that is likely real deployment and some bundling. Gartner also found 38% of companies already over budget on AI, and 85% planning to spend more next year. The Register · Gartner | Counter-Signal Workforce Amazon tells its engineers to stop counting tokensOn Tuesday Amazon published a revised guideline for software engineers that calls token usage and tool-adoption metrics "deeply flawed" because they are disconnected from what matters, and warns that targeting them drives up cost and complexity. Leaders are told to check whether delivery actually improves, and engineers who find AI doesn't help are asked to write down why. Microsoft's Jay Parikh made the same point in August. About Amazon · The Register Amazon's memo lands in the same week two clouds said they can't meet demand. Some of that demand may come from internal mandates scored in tokens. If the biggest users start measuring outcomes, part of the queue gets shorter. That would trim a $561 billion backlog only at the margin, and no provider has said it plans for it. | From the Field For most of the cloud era, the buyer's hard problem was choosing. Capacity was the least interesting promise a cloud made. You picked a region, clicked, and the servers were there. The negotiation was about the discount. This week two of the three largest providers said, in different words, that demand is ahead of what they can build, and one of them is renting other people's compute to keep up. AI programs tend to plan carefully for model choice and rarely for supply. The architecture review asks which model. Nobody asks where the GPUs sit in 2027, or what happens when the region you designed for is full. That was a safe gap when compute was abundant. The useful work now is sorting which workloads truly need frontier capacity and which can run on smaller, cheaper models wherever there is room. That sorting is an engineering job, and it costs less before the renewal than during it. A short list of what truly needs the big models is worth more this quarter than a bigger discount.
